Best heavy duty sewing machine for home use?
miscalaineous asked:
I'm trying to sew on canvas with a 30 year old Kenmore but it is really struggling. I don't want an industrial machine, I'm not planning on starting a business, I just want to sew really heavy material. What works best for you?

Personally I use the Bernina Quilter’s Edition, but I don’t sew such heavy materials. It does sew through denim seams nicely. I do go through many layers when machine quilting (top, wadding and backing) and I can buy quite thick needles over the counter. However, I’m sure there are other brands which would do just as well. If sewing canvas is going to be the main use I honestly think an industrial machine would be best, as the motors on domestics will burn out with a lot of heavy use.

Find an old Singer at a yard sale or garage sale. The old black and gold machines. They will work like a charm.
The newer machines may be able to do it with the right needle.

Try changing the needle. Sometimes it’s that simple. I use to have a problem sewing on very thin, sheer material, until someone advised me on the right needle. Also, there might be a special type of foot you can purchase for thicker fabrics. If you have a machine shop near by, one you take yours to for repair, check with them. If I’m working on something that has a bulky seam(for example, denim) and need to get the foot over the bulk, I use a Jean-a-ma-jig. You can pick these up where they sell notions.
